Illustrated history of Astoria, Oregon featuring the Columbia River, Astoria Column, Lewis and Clark, and Coast Guard.

The History of Astoria

The History of Astoria was commissioned as the cover artwork for Karen Leedom's book celebrating the people, places, and events that shaped one of Oregon's oldest and most fascinating communities. Bill W. Dodge created a richly detailed composition that weaves together Astoria's maritime heritage, early settlement, historic landmarks, and vibrant waterfront into a single visual story.

From Lewis and Clark and the Columbia River to the Astoria Column, Victorian architecture, commercial fishing, and the city's enduring connection to the sea, the artwork invites viewers to explore Astoria's history through Bill's signature narrative style. Every section contains recognizable landmarks and historical references that reward careful observation.

One delightful story behind the painting came after Bill believed the artwork was finished. Author Karen Leedom looked at the completed piece and asked, "Where's the Coast Guard?" Bill joked that there wasn't room for another boat, so he added a Coast Guard helicopter flying above the city—a tribute to an organization that has long played an important role in Astoria's maritime community.

Created for the cover of The History of Astoria, this artwork celebrates the people, history, and traditions that continue to define the city. Printed from Bill W. Dodge's original painting, it is available in multiple sizes for collectors who appreciate Astoria's rich heritage and Pacific Northwest history.
