Secret Within

Secret Within invites viewers to explore the many stories that make Astoria unlike anywhere else. Rather than focusing on a single landmark, Bill W. Dodge weaves together history, culture, wildlife, maritime traditions, and the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest into one imaginative composition.

At the heart of the painting stands the Columbia River Maritime Museum, surrounded by symbols that define the region: the Astoria Riverfront Trolley, Liberty Theatre, Astoria Column, Flavel House, Astoria-Megler Bridge, maritime signal flags, native wildlife, Coast Guard vessels, and historic ships. Indigenous art, Lewis and Clark imagery, and references to the area's rich maritime heritage connect past and present in a single visual story.

Like many of Dodge's narrative works, every viewing reveals another detail. Secret Within rewards curiosity, making it a favorite for collectors who enjoy discovering something new each time they return to the painting.
