Astoria 97103 marks an important milestone in Bill W. Dodge's artistic journey. It was the first painting he created after moving to Astoria in 1990, capturing his excitement for discovering a new hometown rich with history, architecture, and maritime character.
 
The title is a playful nod to the popular television series 90210. Instead of a Beverly Hills ZIP code, Bill chose 97103, Astoria's own ZIP code, celebrating the community that would inspire decades of paintings to come.
 
The composition brings together many of Astoria's most recognizable landmarks, including the Astoria Riverfront Trolley, Liberty Theatre, Flavel House, the waterfront, fishing boats, the Astoria Column, the Astoria-Megler Bridge, and the surrounding hillsides. Like many of Dodge's narrative works, the painting rewards careful viewing with charming characters, local references, and whimsical surprises tucked throughout the scene.
