About the Artist
Astoria, Oregon artist Hannah Hill brings together her passions for seafaring, welding, and nautical storytelling to create one-of-a-kind metal sculptures inspired by the ocean.
Working in the maritime industry since 2019, Hannah currently serves aboard tugboats on the Columbia River. She is a certified Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) welder through the American Welding Society and passed her 100-ton captain's examinations in January 2026.
Through her business, Hot Flash Welding LLC, Hannah discovered a new creative direction, transforming her technical welding skills into imaginative maritime artwork.
Her sculptures are constructed from 3/16-inch round steel bar and 22-gauge sheet steel. Each component is individually cut, shaped, and assembled by hand, then joined using MIG welding techniques. Her work frequently incorporates unexpected details such as illumination, compasses, and clock mechanisms, inviting viewers to explore each piece more closely.
Inspired by ships, sea creatures, and maritime stories, Hannah's sculptures celebrate the relationship between craftsmanship, imagination, and life on the water.
